...Thoughts on Wifely Duties...


This morning my mind has been busy pondering my role as wife and homemaker. Oh, how I love being in our home, taking care of our apartment, caring for my husband, and preparing for our coming baby! There is no job I would rather have than this one! The Lord is continually teaching me, stretching me, and showing me plenty of areas in my own life that I need to work on. Who would have ever guessed that a housewife would have to learn and grow in simple ways? Isn't it supposed to be an "easy" job? That's at least how the world tends to view it. Yet, oh how wrong that view is! Being a homemaker and housewife is a job that requires planning, preparation, perseverance, patience, and a peaceful joy in each menial, daily task! Speaking of daily tasks, the following is what the Lord has been showing me about the importance of the small things I do, or don't do, in our home.
Two days ago, I had spent the day out going to my midwife’s appointment, looking at maternity stores, getting ideas for our coming baby; I went grocery shopping for the week; I came home, baked a new recipe for dinner, and had candles burning and fresh food when Kyle walked through the door of our home after work. When my husband is greeted by a warm smile, a hot dinner, and a clean house, there is an almost immediate sense of calm and rest that comes over him. He is able to enjoy his evening at home, even if he’s had a stressful day at work.     
However, yesterday, as my husband walked through the door of our home, I saw a different scenario. I noticed the sigh in his eyes and his tired quietness that spoke volumes to my heart. I was quickly convicted! Instead of having a clean home, I had spent the day working on a sewing project that I had wanted to accomplish. There was piled up laundry on the back of the couch that I had been too lazy to put away, sewing materials stacked on the kitchen table (which I did at least stack before he got home! Haha), the ironing board standing in the living room with more sewing materials on it, dishes piled in the kitchen sink from dinner the night before, and I’m in the middle of slapping some beans, lettuce, and tomatoes on corn tortillas for us to quickly eat before heading back out the door to our church community group. Now, my gracious husband is always quick to hold his tongue and not judge or critique me. He is so very understanding and compassionate. Yet, even then, a wife knows when her husband is disappointed. 
Now, I don’t know about you, but I notice such a drastic difference between the two days! Granted, every day will be different and some days are busier than others. Also, there is nothing wrong with sometimes having to throw together a quick meal or work on a special project. What I did realize and learn from this is that if I had just taken about forty-five minutes before Kyle got home to pick up the living room and do the dishes; our home would have been much more welcoming and a place of rest for my husband, even if we were eating bean burritos for dinner! Yet, in my mind I had been justifying that fact that at least I was showered, with makeup on, and had stacked up the sewing stuff before he walked in! If that’s the standard I was placing on myself before my husband returned home, how sad for him!
I have been reading in a new book, “Heaven at Home: Establishing and Enjoying a Peaceful Home” by Ginger Plowman. I was reminded of the important role that I play as wife and soon-to-be-mother. She states: “The woman sets the ambiance of the home. If Mom delights in the role that God has ordained her to fill, she sets the stage for the other family members to do the same…. If Mom is uptight and stressed-out over the responsibilities and realities of life, her tension will rub off on the attitudes of her family. If she is neglectful of her everyday duties or negative about the problems that life brings her way, her attitudes will be reflected in the thoughts and actions of her husband and children.” (pg. 19)

I think those of us as wives can tend to underestimate how much of an impact we actually have on our families. I know I do! It’s so easy to get caught up in the mundane things of life and become board with cleaning, cooking, and keeping the home (on top of countless other duties we attend to during the week). Yet, when our motivation to do these things is to first and foremost honor and glorify the Lord and secondly our husbands, what a great blessing this will be to our family! What husband would not love to come home to a wife who is peacefully fulfilling her God-ordained role and duties? Now, obviously, we are not perfect! Even Ginger Plowman says: “How do you keep your focus on making your home a haven when you need a haven too? You absolutely can’t do it in your own strength… You can do it only when you rely on the strength that Christ works in you, the love that he supplies, and the perseverance that the Holy Spirit provides.” (pgs. 39-40)
Our husbands do not seek perfection in our homes. They do not expect for everything to always be “just so.” (At least mine doesn’t. He knows that is not a reality for me. Haha…) However, they do seek a wife who is graciously, submissively, and joyfully fulfilling her role and consistently striving to keep their home in peace and order. A number of years ago, before I was ever married or close to being married, a godly, young married friend of mine encouraged me with these words when I asked about how to get everything done to please my husband. She encouraged me that not every day you are able to actually have things perfect when your husband walks through the door. However, it is wise to ask your husband what would specifically bless him the most to see as he walks in. Some husbands don’t care if the home is a little messy from kids, as long as there is a hot meal of the table. Yet some husbands would rather help prepare dinner with their wife, or play with the kids while the wife cooks, but wants a clean home when he comes in. Or there might be something else that specifically encourages a husband that he will be glad to share with his wife if she only asks.

Knowing what blesses my husband when he comes home, a clean house, has been helpful for me to remember. I know what to work on each day and what should be my focus during the late afternoon, soon before he arrives home. Even as a child, I remember my mother would have my brother and I start picking up our rooms at 4:30 to prepare for the arrival of my dad coming home from work while Mom was busy in the kitchen cooking away. Little did I know that God was using those many years of watching my mother prepare for my dad’s arrival as a training ground for my own home and marriage!
Most importantly in all of this, as we seek to honor our husbands and to keep our homes, we must stay focused on Christ and remember that we are not doing this just for a pat on the back or to receive praise from our husbands. We are doing this to bring honor and glory to the name of Christ. Ginger Plowman says: “True beauty radiates from a woman who gracefully walks the path designed for her. To walk the path of God’s will is to show others the beauty of Christ.” (pg. 23) What could be a better picture of the bride of Christ than to see a woman in her home, joyfully fulfilling her role as she seeks to honor and please her groom and serve him with joy?

Quinoa, Spit-up, Organization... hmm... guess that's life!

So this past week I tried cooking quinoa for the first time. We had that along with our mexican style salmon. It was GREAT! Kyle even asked for a second helping! :-) Quinoa is a simple, gluten free grain, and I cooked it in vegetable stock. Unlike rice, which takes about an hour to cook, quinoa cooks in about 15 minutes! I roasted the kernels before cooking it which added great flavor to the dish. Topped off with flavorful salmon, we had a definite hit!

My weekdays have been fun and filled with "ooo's," raspberries being blown, big baby smiles, spit-up, loud burping, bottles, nap times and diapers! Yes, I love my job as a full-time nanny! Aeden is such a sweet little boy to watch and is so mild tempered! Haha...  right now my jacket is in the washer because I found a big wet spot on the back left sleeve from spit-up... how on earth did it get back there?!?! I have no idea! Of course, the black sleeve of my shirt now happily sports two more spit-up spots where Aeden decided my shirt needed some added color! :-)

Being a full-time nanny has been wonderful for me in preparing me to be a mother one day! Coming from a lifestyle of constantly going and doing, sitting around all day with a baby has been more of an adjustment than I thought! I'm learning to be creative in how I spend his nap times, while the house is quiet. I think I have definitely noticed the need for a "to-do" list for my day or else I'll waste too much time on facebook, blogs, and even reading, while he is asleep.

As to our evenings and weekends, now that Kyle is studying every night, I'm hoping to start working on organizing several different areas in our home that need constant attention. This will require a lot of discipline and creativity for me... neither one of those come naturally for me! :-) If any of ya'll know tips for optimizing small spaces, please feel free to leave me a comment! My sweet friend, Cassandra, sent me a link this morning for this blog post. I can totally relate to this gal's kitchen and I frequently do the "balancing act" of placing pots, pans, plates, etc... on the little area of the sink that she talks about! If you don't remember what our apartment looks like, here are some pictures I posted after we moved in, almost eight months ago. It'll give you an idea of the kitchen. I must say, our apartment is on it's third or fourth "look" since these pictures were taken! I love to move furniture around...

I hope that everyone is doing well. We miss our family and friends in Texas and Georgia! Hopefully it won't be too long before we can see ya'll!

Louisville Fun with Mama and Daddy Roland

On Friday, Kyle's parents drove up to Louisville to spend a couple days with us. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with them and are sad to see them leave. I thought I'd give a pictorial overview of our time together. (Who would have guessed? Pictures? On here? haha...)

After leaving the Seminary, we went to the Mongolian Grill for lunch. It was super yummy! Then we went to the Summit to walk around and shop a little.

Back home after dinner, Mama and I cooked away and prepared Greek food for dinner. This was their first try of hummus and falafel... it went over well I think. :-)

On Saturday morning I had to work but Kyle drove them around Louisville showing them various places we like to go. Then they went to Simply Thai for lunch. Mama said she really enjoyed the Pad Thai she got!

Once I was off work we went to Huber Farm in Indiana, where Mama and I went peach picking. We had so much fun in the little country stores and eating at the family style restaurant!

Enjoying fresh made ice cream. (yes, we splurged...) They make all of their fruit ice creams (except cherry) with handpicked fruit from their farm. Kyle got pumpkin flavored and I got peach. Super good!

Workers were out in the orchards and they were bringing in the peaches by the bushel! They sold them in these cute little baskets in the country store.

Farmers???

Driving back from Hubers we always have to drive past a Catholic church with a huge grave yard. Well, this time as we drove we noticed some chickens were walking around and then we saw their "hair"... I'd never seen a chicken like that in real life before. We made Kyle pull over and Mama and I took off after the chickens... chasing them through the graveyard to take their pictures... haha.. what a sight we must have been to all the neighbors!

They look like they have wigs on!!! I told Mama she needs to put up a picture of this in her beauty shop and say this is what a chicken would look like if she got a hold of it!

Our hubbies were waiting so patiently for us as they watched us (with amusement, I'm sure!) run through the graveyard chasing chickens! haha! Gotta love 'em! :-)

Dinner at the Coobs

Last night Jason took engagement pictures for Kyle and I and then we had dinner together at their house afterward. We had so much fun hanging with our dear friends. Jenny cooked a yummy chicken dish... super good!

Progressive Dinner

Hey everyone!

I had a great time tonight with everyone at our Progressive Dinner. What fun! For those of ya'll who weren't there, we started off the night with everyone meeting at the church and loading up in the buss. Then, everyone drove over to the Joslin's house for soups as our appetizer. Next, we went to the Cook's home for the main course of tacos and mexican casserole. Yummy!!! Then finally, we went to Rose's home for dessert of homemade coconut and vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and mexican cinnamon cheesecake. Ohhh... what a night! Bring on the calories!!! Yum-o! Every single one was worth it!!! :-)


Several people were asking for the recipes from the desserts so I thought I'd post them. Enjoy!

Mexican Cinnamon Cheesecake

2 pkgs. Crescent Rolls
2 bricks of Cream Cheese
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon Vanilla
Cinnamon
1 stick butter

Line 9x13 pan with one can of rolls. Mix together cream cheese, one cup of sugar, and vanilla. Spread over layer of rolls. Line second can of rolls on top of cream cheese mixture. Melt butter and pour over top. Mix 1/2 cup of sugar and cinnamon then sprinkle on top layer.

Bake at 350 until golden brown (20-30 minutes).

Hot Fudge Sauce
(Food Network)

1 cup of sugar
3 cups of cream
1/4 cup light corn syrup
4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
1/4 cup butter
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Put everything except the vanilla in a pot and bring it to a boil. Continue cooking until it looks like it's broken and separating (usually about 20+ minutes). WARNING: do not over cook! Take it off the heat, whisk in the vanilla; then blend it with a hand blender to smooth it out. Chill until ready to serve; then heat it up. Pour over scoops of ice cream, topped with whipped cream and chopped peanuts.

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream

1 gallon whole milk
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 can evaporated milk
2 cups sugar
Splash of vanilla (approx. 1 tbs.)

Coconut (optional)

Place in ice cream churn... enjoy!

Polish Cheesecake


For Father's Day I made this yummy dessert for my family. It's a polish cheesecake with homemade hot fudge sauce, carmel, and pecans on top. Everyone seemed to enjoy it a lot! The cheesecake is also excellent with fresh strawberries and blueberries on top!!! yum yum!!! :-) And the best part... it's flourless so I could eat it!!!

Practicing Hospitality



Ok ladies... I just finished reading my new book "Practicing Hospitality: The Joy of Serving Others." It is outstanding!!! My head is still spinning from all the great practical and biblical tips I learned! I definitely need to re-read the book and take time to really flesh out some of the examples they gave that I can use for my own mission of hospitality.


In each chapter appropriate scriptures are used that help draw our attention to the true reason for practicing biblical hospitality: that of fixing our guests' (and family's) attention on Christ and sharing His mercy and kindness with them. Also, the end of each chapter is accompanied by fun recipes to try in our own endeavors. I've already tried one recipe and the people I made it for loved it!!!


I will say though, that probably my favorite chapter was "Hospitality and Management." I always tend to get caught up in "how to organize" articles and books... Here are a few points the authors cover in this chapter.



  • The Importance of Managing

  • Refuse Idleness

  • Manage Your Home - Why? Because a well-managed home views hospitality as a life-style - not just an event." (pg. 106)

  • Get Organized

  • Establish a Weekly Cleaning Schedule

  • Identify Daily Cleaning Chores

  • Problem Solve for Your Organization Challenges

  • Prepare in Advance for Guests

  • Prepare for Graciousness

  • Set Up A Hospitality Notebook - this was my favorite part!

  • Establish a Purpose for Your Hospitality.

  • Plan for the Unexpected

There is much more to the chapter than this, but this will give you a brief idea. Other chapters cover great topics like: Hospitality and Strangers, Hospitality and Family, Hospitality and Culture, etc...


I could not recommend this book higher, ladies! It is a must read!!!

New book on hospitality...

Ok ladies, I'm SO excited. As I was surfing a blog today, I stumbled upon a new book on hospitality that just came out in January. It's called "Practicing Hospitality: The Joy of Serving Others." The authors are Patricia A. Ennis and Lisa Tatlock who are both professors at The Masters College.

In reading through the preface, table of contents, and endorsements I found myself becoming more and more eager to read it. I promptly placed my order! :-) I'll be sure to post updates on the book when I get it and begin reading through it. Until then... you should check it out for yourself.

Muffins

Ok ya'll, I've been wanting to post this recipe for a while and haven't gotten to it. But, since I'm home today from work because I'm sick, I thought I'd get caught up on some stuff. So... here is my all-time favorite muffin recipe. I've made it so many times... it's SO yummy! You'll be hooked! :-) I don't know who created the recipe... but hats off to whomever did!

Morning Glory Muffins

1 1/2 c. unbleached flour
1/2 c. whole wheat flour
1 1/4 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbls. toasted wheat germ (optional, I don't use this)
2 carrots, peeled and grated
1 large apple, peeled, cored and chopped
1 cup raisins (I use craisins... yum!!!)
2 large eggs
1/4 c. vegetable or canola oil
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 c. chopped pecans or walnuts

Preheat oven to 375o. Lightly oil or spray 12 muffin tins. In large bowl stir together flours, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nuts, wheat germ and craisins. In another bowl stir together remaining ingredients. Combine with dry ingredients. Pour into muffin tins. Bake about 20 minutes. These freeze great and can be made into small loaves instead of muffins.

They are heavy muffins and are great to grab out of the freezer for a quick breakfast when you're running out the door to school or work. I even like 'em cold.
